Sonderlich ausgewogen mag das Design des Superbirds vielleicht nicht erscheinen. Wäre das Plymouth-Modell nicht längst unter US-Car-Interessierten bekannt wie ein bunter Paradiesvogel und weltweit von Muscle-Car-Sammlern gesucht, dann würden die wenigen Zeitgenossen, die heute die Gelegenheit bekämen, einem der eigenwillig gezeichneten Coupés in natura zu begegnen, dieses wohl auch eher für ein Show-Car und das mehr als auffällige Spoilerwerk für bloße Effekthascherei halten. Aber bei der Entwicklung des Superbirds ging es auch weder primär um Schönheit, noch ging es ursprünglich darum, im alltäglichen Straßenverkehr alle Aufmerksamkeit auf sich zu ziehen – obgleich dies dabei letztlich ein durchaus willkommener Nebeneffekt war. Fakt ist aber: Hätten es die Regeln der US-amerikanischen NASCAR-Rennserie zur Homologation als Rennfahrzeug damals nicht so verlangt, dann wäre dieser Fahrzeugtyp wohl kaum jemals offiziell für den Gebrauch im öffentlichen Straßenverkehr angeboten worden …

The American muscle car, introduced in 1949, is an essential component of the car industry.  In response to the sudden demand for faster cars at this time, Oldsmobile débuted its Rocket 88.  The Rocket 88 had a high-compression overhead valve V8 in a lightweight Oldsmobile body.  The body was the same platform as the Oldsmobile 76, which was designed for a six cylinder engine.  This combination created the definition of a muscle car: a car with a light body and a powerful engine.  The Rocket 88 dominated the NASCAR circuit in 1950, escalating the craze for speed.

Muscle car is an American term used to refer to a variety of high-performance automobiles.^[1] The Merriam-Websterdictionary defines muscle cars as "any of a group of American-made 2-door sports coupes with powerful engines designed for high-performance driving."^[2] A large V8 engine is fitted in a 2-door, rear wheel drive, family-style mid-size or full-size cardesigned for four or more passengers. Sold at an affordable price, muscle cars are intended for street use and occasionaldrag racing.^[3][4][5][6] They are distinct from two-seat sports cars and expensive 2+2 GTs intended for high-speed touring androad racing. Developed to meet specific market requirements, muscle cars also emerged from manufacturers in Australia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere.

Bei den ersten Exemplaren des Ford Mustang handelte es sich um weiße Cabriolets mit rotem Interieur, die am 9. März 1964 in Dearborn, Michigan, vom Band rollten. Diese wurden der nordamerikanischen Öffentlichkeit durch eine umfangreiche Werbekampagne nahegebracht. Bereits vor der offiziellen Präsentation waren Fernseh-Werbespots unter dem Motto The Unexpected gelaufen. Am 17. April 1964 wurde der Mustang im Rahmen der New Yorker Weltausstellung erstmals gezeigt, ab 19. April liefen auf allen drei landesweit sendenden Fernsehkanälen neue Fernsehspots, in denen der Wagen, anders als bei den Spots im Vorfeld, auch zu sehen war.

Von 1964 bis 1979 wurde der Ford Mustang als Ford T5 in Deutschland angeboten. Der Preis betrug 1966 in der 3,3-Liter-Version mit Hardtop 16.100 DM.[2] Nach heutiger Kaufkraft und inflationsbereinigt entspricht dies rund 33.000 Euro.
